Pioneer® brand Bettagraze

Bettagraze is a tall, late flowering, late maturing sorghum x sudan hybrid grown for high quality, high yielding summer feed. Bettagraze is ideal for grazing in dairy, sheep and beef systems and also for silage or hay.

New Zealand trials show that Bettagraze significantly out yields Pacific Seeds Sprint. Bettagraze also delivers higher drymatter yields than Pacific Seeds BMR and conventional summer crop competitors.

  • Rapid early growth
  • Quick recovery after grazing or cutting
  • Delayed flowering for increased versatility and ease of management
  • High sugar content, fine stems and a high leaf-to-stem ratio for excellent palatability and good feed value
  • Versatile –can be grazed, direct cut or harvested for silage or hay
  • Available with Mesurol®2 bird repellant at no extra charge. This reduces the risk of bird damage to seedling crops.

BETTAGRAZE ESTABLISHMENT

Bettagraze requires a minimum soil temperature of 17°C for quick germination and establishment. Generally sowing is not recommended before late November-early December. Bettagraze should be planted at 25-45 kg/ha. Higher planting populations will deliver higher crop yields.

Achieving high Bettagraze yields

Choose paddocks with good water holding capacity and medium to high fertility status.

Soil test to determine crop fertiliser requirements.

Spray out the paddock and cultivate to achieve a fine, even weed-free seedbed.

For fast establishment, plant when the soil temperature is at least 17°C and rising at 5 cm depth.

Drill and roll Bettagraze into a fine, moist seedbed at 3-5 cm depth. Broadcast sowing is not recommended.

Plant at 25-45 kg/ha. Crops planted at higher rates will have thinner stems and a higher yield potential.

Graze Bettagraze behind a wire or cut it 35-45 days after planting when the crop reaches around 1 metre in height. Leave a residual of 15 cm for maximum regrowth.

Recut or graze after 4-5 weeks when the crop is at least 0.8 m and no more than 1.2 m in height.

Monitor nitrate and prussic acid levels especially in crops that have been drought stressed or frosted.
