Peter and Nancy Russell, Ballance, 2005/06 season
Peter and Nancy Russell farm 440 Friesian-Jersey cross cows on 130 ha (eff.) at Ballance in the Wairarapa. Maize silage is an integral part of their farming system. It is fed from two weeks prior to calving until November when pasture growth exceeds cow demand. In the autumn maize silage is fed at around 3 kgDM/cow/day to increase cow condition prior to drying off.

Maintaining maize silage quality and minimizing storage losses are important goals for Noldy and Bev Rust. The Rusts farm 52 ha (eff.) at Te Pahu in the Western Waikato. For the past three seasons they have fed 150-200 tDM of Pioneer inoculated maize silage to their 200 cow Friesian and Friesian cross herd.

Fonterra Westpac Dairy Excellence Awards and has also won
three major Waikato Ballance Farm Environmental Awards.

Making maize silage even better
Kevin and Jenny Ferris, Te Awamutu, 2003/04 season
Making large amounts of silage and preserving it effectively has proven a challenge for Te Awamutu farmers Kevin and Jenny Ferris. Stocked at 3.7 cows/ha on their 153 ha property the emphasis is on minimizing grass wastage. This includes maximising pasture harvested in the paddock and making any surplus into quality pasture silage.
